Are you in the process of moving and at the same time trying to sell your current home? Many people find themselves in this predicament. It’s a fine balance of ensuring that your home looks presentable to prospective buyers while at the same time living there. Here are a few steps you can take to make the whole process easier and smoother.

Deep clean existing house

Step one is to do a full, all-encompassing cleaning in your existing home to make it as appealing as possible to prospective buyers. Put away clutter, steam clean carpets to get out stains or smells, polish hardwood floors and don’t forget about dust in places you may not normally clean; for example, baseboards, blinds and window sills.

Pack away unnecessary items

If you haven’t found a new home or closed on it quite yet, it’s a good idea to begin packing as soon as possible. Instead of leaving boxes of things you don’t use on an everyday basis (like fine china or other dishes, paintings, figurines, books or clothing that is out of season) stacked around your house, it’s smart to store them in a garage, a storage unit or even a generous neighbor or friend’s house. This way, you can reduce clutter for the potential home buyers.

Stage existing home

Another way to make your home attractive to potential buyers is to stage your home. This could mean organizing, displaying minimal art, rearranging furniture, toning down the color palette or doing a little landscaping. Whether you employ a professional or do it yourself, get to staging!

Optimize time

If you have to be out of your home for a showing, make the most of your time. Maybe stop by an open house of your own or schedule a showing of the house that you are interested in during the same time that your house is being shown.  If you have already closed on a new home, load up your car or truck with your belongings and head over to the new home while the existing one is being shown. You can unpack or do a little decorating while you wait.
